Jeffrey R. Newman (a.k.a. NuISMS) is an East Coast born, self educated visual artist, painter, writer, actor, producer - creator.
Jeffrey draws inspiration from his broad interest in music and popular culture growing up in the 70’s and 80’s. As the visual artist ‘NuISMS,’ Jeffrey engages with multiple mediums.
Greatly moved by the work of Gerhard Richter & Jackson Pollock, Jeffrey began to play with movement and texture as a child when he threw/splattered paint on his Converse sneakers. He found relief from teen angst in drawing and sketching. He later found his way back to his tactical nature through stitching and designing art on clothing. Currently, Jeffrey works with acrylic on canvas, in a wide range of sizes and is exploring the use of resin. NuISMS has had solo and group shows in the Los Angeles area and participated in Regional Art Shows like Grand Rapid Michigan’s ArtPrize.
Jeffrey leaned into writing and began acting at Michigan State and Florida State. You may have seen Jeffrey in various acting roles including Sons Of Anarchy, a commercial or two, indie films like Garden Party and Sony’s The Bannen Way. This past spring Jeffrey was honored to perform with the Momentum Theater Company in their production of Cat’s-Paw by William Mastrosimone and directed by Tony Denison.
Always looking to move forward creatively, Jeffrey has written cult shorts like Untitled J.C. Project, or the feature - New Americans. Jeffrey found a through line that pulled all his creative talents into a focused project: blank canvas, the one person show & art show - originally titled, I Wanna Be Jeff Newman.
Jana Lee Hamblin, a Portland native who has been in LA for 6 years. She has been acting professionally for over 28 years and directing and teaching for 17. Jana wrote, produced and directed CODE PINK at Loft Ensemble with her writing partner Adam Chambers during the pandemic and was thrilled to direct I wanna be Jeff Newman and it’s 2nd run & rebranding blank canvas. Jana and Jeff have been friends for close to 25 years and she is grateful to be able to work alongside of him.
